Japan's Plastic Heart - Vinyl Toys Attack Winnipeg

Posted by Thrift Dweller NC
designed by Lunartik (UK)

Like Godzilla, Japan's Designer Toy craze has invaded the world in the form of a collectible sub culture. I even found one of these monsters at my local thrift store. Inspired by my latest THRIFT DWELLING find, I present my "5 minute expert*" take on Designer Vinyl Toys. (thrift store find after the jump)

Background
In the 1990's, Hong Kong's Pioneer Michael Lau began designing street culture inspired vinyl toys in limited editions, this later spawned into the "Urban Vinyl" style that sparked the designer toy subculture. More expensive than childhood He-Man, Designer toys are geared towards the "collector", they are readily available now more than ever.

Like He-Man, these toys are pure inspiration (fyi, He-Man toys came out before the show!). With world wide artists like MCA (USA), superdux (France) and Lunartik (UK), there is no short supply of this limited edition art. Add that to the fact it's in a familiar package (toys), this monster might be here for a while, I hope it won't consume me.

April 2011, Michael Lau collection - Sold for over $4900.00 usd. Good deal

Nintendo Wii Motion Plus for $3.99 found at Value Village. I don't know if it was a screw up from an employee as the Motion Plus attachment was in the rubber sleeve. It may have been overlooked when they put it out on the floor. Nintendo did release Motion Plus controllers, only time will tell if the attachments are sought out for in the future.
