1000 CD's and still counting...

Resident music collector reaches his goal... feeling happy. =) Hey guys, long time no post. It's d_cypher (aka LP, Lester). For the readers of the blog, I'm here to share what's been a goal maybe for the past year (perhaps my lifetime?). I have reached over 1000 CD's! Yes, over 1000 and I'm STILL on the hunt to look for albums I'm missing. Music runs down my veins and digital downloads will NEVER EVER take over in my book. Definitely continue to click on READ MORE for the list.

Best Video Game Pick Ups (thus far!)

A bag of happiness, we present some of our most popular finds. A decade of Thrift Dwelling has brought us countless stuff, but there are a few that stand out more than others. We've been exploring Winnipeg's Thrift Stores and other second hand spots for a few years, and have picked up some sweet stuff. At the risk for tipping off the Thrift Stores to raise their prices, we present our BEST video game pick ups from the Thrift Store! Factory Sealed Games, $.99 Masterpiece and happiness in a bag. Check it out!

Fireflight - It isn't hip-hop...

Something different for all the thriftdwellers out there. Having an open ear for music, we introduce to you Fireflight. A Christian rock band. On March 6, they released their anticipated album Now. We will go over their studio discography including the new album.

The wonders of emulation... SNES in HD and perfection.

A classic... in standard def =( So you connected your old pre-HD Super Nintendo system to your nice HDTV. Only to find out it looks like crap. Well no fear. You can play these classics on your computer. Today we will look at the emulator bSNES.

De La Soul is... Missing?

Could it be? A golden ticket of some sort? Nope. It's De La Soul Is Dead. From the recent thrift store exodus yesterday . NC was lucky enough (or shall we say gifted enough?) to find this bad boy in a pile of DVD's. What is it? De La Soul Is Dead - Promotional Copy ! As the music guy and hip-hop head for the blog I had no idea this existed... until now.

Bad Boy Records - Can't Stop, Won't Stop. (1994-1999)

Making History.... In honor of The Notorious B.I.G's 15th anniversary of his death. I present to you my collection of the complete 90's discography for Bad Boy Records. From hardcore hip-hop, smooth R&B, the dreaded "shiny suit" era, and to the end where none of it made sense anymore. Any fan of music will appreciate what Puffy (Yes, we still call him that.) has brought to the music world.

The Collector Strikes

We just started a section call " Recent Pickups ", which we will be updating regularly when we buy stuff.  N8 is Retro Video Game guy (nintendo, sega and playstation) and LP is the music man who collects CDs.  Originally, we started this blog to talk about the items we buy from Winnipeg's second hand spots, like Thrift Stores and Pawn Shops. We call this Winnipeg's "discarded subculture", our city`s micro history on what was prevalent at the time. They say you can tell a lot about a city by the way they entertain themselves... but what can you tell about the things they throw away? (Man, VHS was big back then!) Sometimes we find treasures, sometimes just empty promises... Visit  Recent Pick Ups  <<<

For all the lovers... Happy Valentine's Day!!

It's that time of year again! From us to you. Happy Valentine's Day! We all know it's a corporate holiday. But some people do cherish this day. Thrift Dweller NC himself has a special someone in his life. So shout out to him! Myself on the other hand is free, so with this post I present a playlist for you lovers out there after the jump!

Whitney Houston Dead at 48

A brilliant voice of our generation has been lost. The Queen of Pop, Whitney Houston was found dead in a Beverley Hills Hotel at the age of 48. No cause has been released at this time, but what is known is that another raw talent has left this earth prematurely. Although the recent years of her life have been mered in controversy, the legacy she has left and the music she has made will live on for generations. photo credit - vintagevinyljournals.com Whitney Houston was the female force of the late 80's, she was the first female to have a no.1 best selling album and the inspiration of many superstars, such as Brandy and Christna Aguilera. With songs like I Will Always Love You and The Greatest Love of All , her unforgettable voice was not only the soundtrack to movies, but also our lives. She will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. -thrift dwellers

A day off. Let's go to the music store!

A nice, sunny and somewhat cold day. Where else to spend it but at a local music store. The spot? Music Trader here in Winnipeg. It's a great store in Osborne Village, and has been a great source for most of my collection in the past 10+ years. I usually visit Music Trader on my days off. Here's a tour and my finds.

Adventures in hoarding... Variants.

With most people, collecting only one copy of an item is fine and good enough for them. In most cases, there are others who take it to the next level to find different variations of the same material. Personally, as a music collector, it is a must to have a complete collection.  "If you don't know, now you know ni**a" - The Notorious B.I.G. Can you spot the difference? So sit back, relax and get schooled on my first installment of Adventures in hoarding... Variants. Today we will look at The Notorious B.I.G's first album READY TO DIE .

DeBarge - Limited Edition Talent

Finally a box set worth owning for any fan of R&B. For those who don't know who DeBarge is, you will recognize most of their hits from songs like The Notorious B.I.G's One More Chance and 2Pac's I Ain't Mad At Cha. DeBarge was a family R&B group on Motown Records in the early to mid 80's. El, Randy, Bunny, Mark and James DeBarge rose to super stardom with their soft singing and ability to write great and timeless classics. Sadly, Motown wanted to market El DeBarge as the next big thing, and started to distance himself from the rest of the family. Bunny ended up having one solo album after she left as well. For the rest of the brothers, they had one album after they left Motown with another DeBarge brother, Bobby. Who was in the group Switch, who were also signed to Motown in the mid to late 70's. He later died of complications from Aids in 1995, and the rest of the singing family are now suffering from addictions as well. After battling addicti...

Amy Amy Amy

What can I say, I love Amy Winehouse. In fact this is probably the most complete collection of her material. You may ask, hey what's that book doing there? Actually it's not a book. It's a 4 CD limited edition deluxe box set of Frank and Back To Black UK deluxe edition CD's! The box set has all the songs from her first two albums and 2 bonus discs that includes B-Sides, remixes, unreleased songs and covers like Monkey Man (which is a great song by the way). Apparently I'm missing the US version of Back To Black which has the remix of You Know I'm No Good with Wu-Tang Clan's very own Ghostface Killah. It's something not to worry about, as the song is featured on his album More Fish . She had style like no other. Watch the concert, it's great on Blu-Ray and even though she can't dance. It's really funny how she plays with her hair and drink "pop" at the same time during the concert and still KILLS it. - d.cypher L...
