Slated for release on Feb 15 2012 is Retro-bit's Retro Duo Portable (RDP), with an MSRP of $89.99. It boasts compatibility for both Super Nintendo (SNES) and Nintendo (NES) games on the go, with a 3.5 inch LCD screen and a battery life of 6 - 8 hours. You can pre-order it locally in Winnipeg at PNP Games now. Will it be worth it? It was on display earlier this month at the 2012 CES (Consumer Electronics Show)...
Engadget reviewed this system at the 2012 CES with some mixed reviews...
Pros
-longer battery life than other portable retro systems
-available adaptor from Retro Bit for Sega Genesis (they also say it works for other 3rd party snes systems)
-No problems playing SNES games.
-A/V out with multiplayer with the retro duo controller adaptor. (can double as a home system).
Cons
-Light weight feels cheap, buttons feels loose
-Requires adaptor (included) to play the NES games, adding some bulk. Also complaints of scan lines with NES.
-Screen appears washed out and cheap at some angles.
Overall, you won't find a 3rd party system perfectly built well unless you're willing to take out the soldering iron and build a duo system yourself. It's exciting that this is portable with decent battery life (my portable SNES only system has 3.5 hours at most!). But, it feels like this may be for the hard core retro gamers. Let me know if you get it and what you think. You can pre-order now at PNP Games in Winnipeg.
-Happy thrifting.
