Friday Night Fights - Test Your Might!

Beating up all your buddies at home? Time to take it to the streets. Every Friday, chipdamage.com hosts a weekly fight club... for video games that is. A group of local fighting game enthusiasts gather at the University of Manitoba Science Lounge and duke it out in video games, like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom and Soul Caliber...

here's the report...

Background
Outsiders to video game fighting may not know, there is a competitive, world wide community of gamers that take this "stuff" seriously:
-EVO hosted the world's largest fighting video game tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada this year, to crown the best fighter in the world at many different fighting games.
-Finalroundbat, the tournament of East vs. West, pits the best of Japan against the best of America for money and, more importantly, braging rights.

But where does Winnipeg fit in the grand scheme of things?

...admiring some sweet Soul Caliber skill.

It was time again for Chipdamage.com's Friday Night fights. I decided to come alone, but I still felt comfortable. Everyone seemed to know each other here. I approached Jim, one of the guys from Chipdamage.com running this event. He`s been working on promoting the Winnipeg Fighting Game scene for some time now. "They way I look at it..." said Jim, "...Winnipeg is like Nintendo..." when compared with how far ahead other Canadian scenes were. But they`re working on that. By promoting local tournaments and events, Chipdamage.com is helping put Winnipeg on the map. Even though tonight was a very casual vibe, you got a sense there was more going on than just some dudes playing Street Fighter.

Dudes with their sticks... um.... yah

"We have really skilled players here, but everyone is welcome to play." mentioned Jim. He was right, you could tell everyone here had skills. "We're all approachable... and willing to help you out..." Standing around, I could hear people critiquing eachother`s technique, offering tips and advice. I even felt my fighting ability getting better just standing there. In the end, I knew I would be back, but I remember asking myself one question as I left... "Where was this when I was in University?"

The tools of the trade...

Check them out, Happy Thrifting.

  1. Wow, why'd it take so long for this to get noticed? :P

Glad you enjoyed the scene though, it's always growing (we've began to stream online tournaments, I believe we did it before your visit but not sure if it was mentioned). Make sure to drop by once in a while, maybe get in some casuals! :P

  2. I'ld love to make it down one night. My co-blogstar LP is trying to convert me to using a fight pad rather than controller, and I think he's right. Seeing some of the sweet ones there, I gotta get one now before going down. Keep up the good work!

Nintendo Wii Motion Plus for $3.99 found at Value Village. I don't know if it was a screw up from an employee as the Motion Plus attachment was in the rubber sleeve. It may have been overlooked when they put it out on the floor. Nintendo did release Motion Plus controllers, only time will tell if the attachments are sought out for in the future.
