The wonders of emulation... SNES in HD and perfection.

A classic... in standard def =(
So you connected your old pre-HD Super Nintendo system to your nice HDTV. Only to find out it looks like crap. Well no fear. You can play these classics on your computer. Today we will look at the emulator bSNES.

Super Nintendo Overview

Now your playing with power... SUPER POWER
The Super Nintendo was a great system, it was leaps and bounds ahead of its time. Personally, I think it was better than the NES in terms of game quality and polish. You can say it had the blueprint for the modern console controller 6 buttons and comfortable as well. The games have stood the test of time and are still a blast to play. Nothing like playing the original Super Mario Kart on a Friday night when you are bored. Mode 7, the best thing Nintendo has ever invented and advertised!

NC has a stash of Super Mario World games.

Save the world... Contra III The Alien Wars.
Byuu (the author, writer, programmer) of bSNES created this monster in hopes to ACCURATELY emulate the Super Nintendo. For those who are familiar with emulation over the years we've been blessed with ZSNES and SNES9X, while they are great emulators to get the job done. Byuu has taken the extra step to reverse engineer the SNES hardware, reverse engineer the specialized chip sets for games (like the DSP-1 for Mario Kart and others) in hopes to create a faithful SNES emulator.

Super Castlevania IV... another classic. Konami made great games for the SNES.

The result, a clock accurate emulator that feels and sounds like you are playing a Super Nintendo. Play Final Fantasy III on SNES9X then play and compare it to bSNES and a real SNES, you will know right away what I am talking about. What's great about emulation is that it's portable (in some cases), playing the games per pixel on an HDTV looks wonderful, and with the internet even play online with your friends on an old system. Only the best emulators can out perform the original hardware in terms of graphics and sound. Plus, lost classics will never be lost and played in their original form.

Off Topic: Street Fighter III 3rd Strike is a game that comes to mind, you will never see me play a ported console version. I will only play the emulated version on MAME as intended on the original arcade hardware. MAME is also an arcade emulator that strives on perfection and emulating arcade hardware correctly.

Requirements

Now, even though the Super Nintendo is an old system. To faithfully and accurately play it on your computer, you will need a computer with a beefy processor.  You can still use the emulator in "compatibility mode" if you have a PC that's not up to snuff.

Why Emulate? Isn't it illegal?

Depending on which country you live in, yes and no. Here in Canada, the emulators are legal however the roms (games) aren't if you do not own the original copy. So if NC "the master of video games" got busted for playing roms on emulators, he has the proof of owning a mega collection of classics.

So for all you fellow thriftdwellers and geeks I highly recommend emulating, it's the only way to go if you do not want to touch your personal video game collection.

- Happy Thrifting.

  1. SUPER MARIO AND STREET FIGHTER were my obsessions when they first came out! Do you remember Game Genie? Were they even for this system? It's been too long...

Nintendo Wii Motion Plus for $3.99 found at Value Village. I don't know if it was a screw up from an employee as the Motion Plus attachment was in the rubber sleeve. It may have been overlooked when they put it out on the floor. Nintendo did release Motion Plus controllers, only time will tell if the attachments are sought out for in the future.
