My brief career as a PlayStation 2 game beta tester

Live In Your World, Play In Ours

Remember that slogan? The summer of 2001, 17 young and had a job! What did I do with my cheque before school started? I bought myself a PlayStation 2, blew 600 bucks that day, console, extra controller, memory card and 2 games which were Onimusha and International Track and Field. It was good times, it was a step up from the PS1 and N64 which NC and I played with friends all the time during lunch hour. LOL (that's another story in itself, we played NBA Hang Time until the PS1 froze, no joke!). I was lucky enough to buy the "fat" version of the PS2, a year later they released a network adapter for online play.

How it came to be...

PlayStation Underground was a club for PlayStation fans which I was a part of, they gave away swag like shirts, posters and demos... if you were lucky enough even beta test network games. This is even before PlayStation Network was even named the PlayStation Network. The cool thing I was able to be a beta tester for 2 games. This is my story...

Are you serious? It must of been fun!

Yes, at the time I had a lot of time in my hands. So much so when I got picked for the betas, playing the games were even more fun. You felt like you were a part of something. Overall the experience was great and giving feedback to Sony was hilarious. I'm proud to say that I had a hand with helping Sony. Thanks for the shirt BTW.

The games

The first game I was chosen for was Auto Modellista which was released in 2003 in North America, it's a racing game made by Capcom. Think of it as a cel-shaded Initial D type driving game with less emphasis on physics and more on the drifting side. Luckily my PS2 was modded, and had a chance to try the Japanese version even before I was selected for the North American network beta test. For the hardcore, the Japanese version was VERY different from the North American version. In fact, Capcom made a Japanese release of this game again called Auto Modellista US TUNED.  My beta copies were a 2 month trial. Version 1.0 was month 1, Version 2.0 was month 2.

The 2nd game I was chosen for was SOCOM 3 U.S. Navy Seals in 2005. It needs no description as many people know this game. If you are unaware it is a 3rd person shooter made by Sony. It was an okay game. Anyways, here are the pictures....

Thank you letter from Capcom's Auto Modellista team, and the beta discs.
Auto Modellista manual (have 2 copies, both are identical)
Auto Modellista NOT FOR RESALE Public Beta volume 2.0 disc.
Auto Modellista NOT FOR RESALE Public Beta volume 1.0 disc.
Both games with manuals.

Do these still work?

Yes, they will still work inside a PS2. Due to the nature of betas, the service and network are shut down. Rendering these games useless.

Oh yeah, I even got PSP UMD game demos laying around from Sony too. More to come!

Happy Thrifting!

Nintendo Wii Motion Plus for $3.99 found at Value Village. I don't know if it was a screw up from an employee as the Motion Plus attachment was in the rubber sleeve. It may have been overlooked when they put it out on the floor. Nintendo did release Motion Plus controllers, only time will tell if the attachments are sought out for in the future.
